This school year, a group of 100 students in the fifth and sixth grade will form the inaugural cohort of Mott Haven Academy Middle School for Social Leadership. Eventually, the school will be Pre-K through eighth grade.
Fausto Perez, who plays soccer at Hunter College, lives right across the street from a play space known as “La Canchita” or “The Pitch” on the grounds of PS 49 in Mott Haven. Now that space has been remodeled and named for Perez.
The six-lane Bruckner Boulevard has one of the highest traffic volumes in the city, and was the scene for three vehicular deaths in March and April. As a result, neighbors and elected officials are demanding that the city make some changes to improve lives for pedestrians.
