Bronx Week, the annual celebration of the best of what the borough has to offer, kicked off on Monday at Mott Haven Bar and Grill with the announcement of this year’s inductees to the Walk of Fame. Rapper Slick Rick, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, and actress Maggie Siff joined the list, considered to be the highest honor in the borough.

“This is when we celebrate everything that’s good about the Bronx in a variety of ways,” said Olga Tirado, executive director for The Bronx Tourism Council. “We are the legacy of those people so we celebrate them.”

This year’s celebration, running from March 10 to 20, marks the 47th anniversary of Bronx Week. The origin was Bronx Day, a celebration that included a parade to Grand Concourse. Over the years, the event has grown to include several events, workshops, parades and festivals.

Festivities this year include Bronx Salsa, a kick-off for a series of concerts put on by the Southern Boulevard BID, that will include live music, food and games on Saturday, May 12 from 11:00-1:30 AM at Monsignor Valle Square. The Annual Bronx Ball, a star-studded and ticketed event celebrating the sons and daughters of the Bronx, is set for May 19, 6-10 PM. The celebrations will conclude with the Annual Bronx Week Parade and Bronx Food & Arts Festival on May 20 from 12-6 PM at Mosholu Parkway at Bainbridge Avenue.

New to this year’s line-up is an Olympic-style sporting event coordinated by Bronx Fathers Taking Action. The family-oriented sporting event aims to get parents and kids up and moving, and also encourages fathers to be more involved in their children’s lives. The event will take place on May 12 at Williamsbridge Oval Park.

“Families will compete and get trophies. It is helping people engage in sports and start exercising,” said Tirado.

With 10 days packed full of events, many free and open to the public, all Bronxites can find a way to get involved as a way to celebrate the borough they call home. You can find which event, or events, you want to attend at http://ilovethebronx.com.
