Power Up for Health, a new program designed to help men of all ages prevent the onset of diabetes, will begin at St. Mary’s Recreation Center in mid-August.

The program focuses on healthy eating, beating stress, and exercising as the means to help men stave off the disease.

The South Bronx has some of the city’s highest diabetes rates for men, according to the NYC Department of Health, whose most recent estimates are that 14 percent of men from the area have been diagnosed with the illness, which can damage the heart, eyes, kidneys, and feet.

The program, part of a study developed by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and The New York Academy of Medicine, will be free and open to men 18 or older who are at risk of type 2 diabetes. Men who enroll in the program will meet once a week as a group and work with a trained lifestyle coach for about an hour each time. The group will meet for 16 weeks to learn healthy eating, exercise, and stress management.

Participants who attend for four weeks will receive a six-month NYC Parks Department membership. Progress will be tracked throughout the 16 weeks, so the researchers can see how well the project works.
