And they're off. Racers tour Hunts Point in the 5 kilometer road race.

Party in the park will follow 5-k road race

This year’s Hunts Point Hustle won’t be just a road race. It will be a party, too.

The annual event sponsored by Sustainable South Bronx will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Hunts Point Riverside Park and end with a celebration on the waterfront in Barretto Point Park. The first-time after-race party will feature music, food, Zumba, kids’ activities, and healthy-living giveaways.

First-place male and female finishers in the five-kilometer race will win two JetBlue tickets each. New York State Assemblyman Marcos Crespo will be announcing the race’s winners at 1 p.m.

The Hunts Point Hustle is Sustainable South Bronx’s main community event of the year. Proceeds from the race help fund its green collar job training program, BEST Academy, as well as its community greening initiatives, including work to promote the development of the South Bronx Greenway, a recreational route on or near the water that will take walkers and cyclists from the Bronx River at Riverside Park to the New Hunts Point Landing and Barretto Point and from there through Port Morris to Mott Haven, where it will join a bridge to Randall’s Island.

“This event aims to be a celebration of the South Bronx Greenway,” said Michael Brotchner, Sustainable South Bronx’s executive director. “When it’s completed, the Greenway will include parks, bike and pedestrian paths, and entirely new waterfront spaces for South Bronx residents to enjoy. The Hustle will enable those who run or walk the race – and even everyone who just attends the celebration afterwards – to see how much the Greenway has progressed and how much there is to enjoy.”

Participants may register for the race online at ssbx.org or sign up to form a team or fundraising page. Those without internet access can register by sending their name, address, telephone number, t-shirt size and $5 to SSBx at 1231 Lafayette Avenue, 4th Floor, Bronx, NY 10474. SSBx also seeks sponsors for the race, as well as environmental, health-based or other local groups to set up displays of their goods or services at Barretto Point Park.
